Colophon

How this site is made.

The seed

The site is made from astro-forge v2.0.1, my seed for Astro sites: a core and removable modules, kept current by one command. I built it from the practices of the sites before this one, so each new site starts with what the last one learned. This site adds the pdf module, which prints the résumé page as its one-page PDF, so the two can't drift.

The gate

Every push runs a gate of 22 steps, and a failure stops the push. It lints the code, measures the contrast of every color pair in both themes, and checks the types and tests. Then it builds the site and reads what was built: accessibility, links, search metadata, the copy's voice, personal data, page weight, and one pass in a real browser over every kind of page in each theme.

How it's built

Static pages built with Astro and Tailwind CSS, served by Cloudflare as plain files, with no server code. Each project is one Markdown file; the Projects, Lineage, and Materials views are three readings of the same files.

Type

Set in Alegreya, designed by Juan Pablo del Peral for Huerta Tipográfica, served from this site. The italics mark each want, and nothing else.

Images

Each project's images are its own: screenshots and drawings of the work, none generated. The particles also draw public-domain artworks and NASA images, each credited in the particle gallery.

The particles

Every page has a field of particles, drawn in your browser. On the home page, the Seed of Want page, and the particle gallery, they gather into an image and react to the pointer. If your device is set to reduce motion, they hold still. Pause stops them on every page until you press Play or close the tab.

The mark

The mark frames the honeycomb hexagon of Loudoun Bees around the Seed of Want: a worker bee whose wings are a pair of pear seeds. The left wing opens with the hollow cavity of a want; the right wing holds the dark nucleus of what was made.
